Faith Spaces in Schools
A moment of pause in the middle of a school day
Our team reflects on our weekly presence in Sacred Heart Secondary School, providing a space in the middle of the day for young people to come to the chapel.
'“For the past six months, we've had the privilege of spending time with the Year 7s in the Sacred Heart school chapel. From the very beginning, our heart for this session was that it would have a high impact on the young people we connect with, despite the challenge of having just 30 minutes each Tuesday.
Each week, we bring in a small craft activity, something simple but engaging, which both the girls and boys enjoy. Alongside this, we offer a short “thought for the day” a small message to inspire, encourage, or spark reflection.
What’s been most encouraging is how open and comfortable the Year 7s have become in sharing their thoughts and opinions. The group has grown over time, with numbers increasing week by week (with the occasional quiet session when something else is on at school). It’s been clear that the chapel has become a real safe space for them, a place to eat lunch, be themselves, and have meaningful conversations.
As a youth worker, this 30-minute session has become one of my favourite parts of the week. Every Tuesday, it feels like we’re building real connections and creating a space that truly matters to the young people who come.”
